about

Thick brown textured paper wraps a 3” CDR, adorned with a medieval image silk-screen and lovingly sealed with a wax stamp. Inside lurks a mini jewel case graced with x-ray artwork, both semi-translucent and eerie. The combination of century spanning design conjures immediate intrigue, yet complete anonymity is achieved through the lack of any literary information. After searching record archives, and the obvious Google-route, I unearthed the culprit as musician Matt Riley. The single takes shape slowly over 20minutes of droning meandering. Various minimal analogue manipulations and electronic blips are curdled and sifted through subtle harmonies. Doom heavy clouds roll with determined velocity covering one’s surroundings with a blanket of sound. I asked Matt where he drew his inspiration from and some of his suggestions illustrate exactly what you can expect from the record. The Occult, Old Timey Music, Crystals, Animal Skulls, Meditative States and Folklore.

The ensuing sound unwraps itself with focussed and chanted hypnotism. The hash-induced trance is one of utter emotional meltdown allowing for direct focus on the microscopic. The sound seems to incorporate numerous sources, from haunting winds to whirling tape reels, yet never strays from a seemingly singular vain of thought. As a whole, artwork included, this feels like an essential little package that appears laboured yet feels expansive – free. 8/10 -- Peter Taylor (9 December, 2008 from Foxy Digitalis)
